lighttpd

lighttpd is a secure, fast, compliant and flexible web server which has been optimized for high–performance environments. It has a very low memory footprint compared to other web servers and lightens CPU load. Its advanced feature set and raw speed make lighttpd suitable for servers that are suffering load problems. lighttpd is open source, and distributed under the BSD licence.

Abyss Web Server

Abyss Web Server is a free personal web server for Windows, MacOS X, Linux, and FreeBSD. It supports HTTP/1.1, dynamic content generation through CGI/1.1 scripts, SSI, custom error pages, and access control.

Jigsaw

Jigsaw is the W3C leading-edge Web server platform, providing a sample HTTP 1.1 implementation and a variety of other features on top of an advanced architecture implemented in Java. The Jigsaw distribution contains the Java source code, the documentation and the pre-compiled classes.

Apache Web Server

Apache Web Server download page. Apache is the most popular web server and production sites run on some flavor of Unix/Linux, but for some time now there has been a version for testing and development on Win32 platforms that runs just fine on my old win98 se computer. Supports PHP, downloaded separately from php.org, and can be integrated with Tomcat for servlets/jsp (see below).

Tomcat

Tomcat is the servlet container that is used in the official Reference Implementation for the Java Servlet and JavaServer Pages technologies. (It can serve static html pages too, but it is usually integrated with apache)

Xitami is a multithreaded Web server. Though small and simple, Xitami is robust enough to handle high-volume intranets. Built from the ground up as a high-performance Web server engine, it pumps data onto the network at top speed.
